Almost everyone is passionate about music. Almost everyone listens to it, and a large part of people play instruments, and sing, just for pleasure. And I respect that very much, understand and support it. I also teach amateurs, music enthusiasts who just want to be more passionate, know more and understand more about music.
There always comes a point in learning music when tablature or your own notation system is not enough. Many people learn by heart for years. Unfortunately, at some point in musical advancement, learning notes becomes necessary.
The process of learning sheet music is similar to learning to read. So in the beginning you have to have a lot of patience. But it is worth getting through this stage, sacrificing yourself for the sake of your passion. Knowing the notes, you can play with others and be understood in a musical way. The language of music is universal. Knowing only the notation system and basic musical terms, you are able to create a piece with a person with whom you have no common language in speech. There were situations in which I was involved in the preparations for a concert, which was conducted by a foreigner for whom English was at a very basic level. And yet he managed to get along with everyone – to direct the entire orchestra, choir and soloists. The piece he led was Handel’s Messiah, so not just any piece of music. It was the same at all masterclasses I attend. Knowledge of notation and basic musical terms was enough to learn from the best foreign conductors.
How little is needed. Really!
