building an analogue portfolio: hand-coloured portrait | analog photography

I decided to make a completely analogue portfolio. It will be in a4 format and will include vertical black and white and colour portraits. Some of the photographs will be hand-coloured, like the one today.

I spent two days on colouring this one. I wanted to preserve all the details of the shirt. I coloured it according to its original hue, only the colours of the flowers were made up. Initially I wanted to paint the glass as well, but when I finished the shirt I decided that the photograph was just finished.

It reminds me of one of my first hand-coloured photograph. A few years ago, while still learning analogue photographic development techniques, I used my friend’s photos of her newborn daughter for practice. The first thing I coloured was little Wanda’s pyjamas. I remember this photo very well, although I no longer have it physically.

Also, this portrait is an ode to my first attempts and fun with paint on black and white photographs. From 2018 to 2023.

Canon eos300, Fomapan 200, Rodinal 1:100, home print, watercolours.
