about making a difference | for nature

It’s summer. There is a lot of talk about the weather in my neighborhood. Whether in Poland where I come from, or in Switzerland where I live. The weather affects us a lot, it’s capricious, it rains, it storms, it’s hot, it’s unbearable. In Switzerland we have a very strange aura this year. The annual snowman burning in Zurich did not take place (due to the rain) and it is widely believed that this is why we have such a lousy summer. Lousy it was, it’s true, until about mid-July. Normally, summer feels in the air pretty quickly for central Europe, somewhere in May it’s already warming up, and June is hot in full swing. Not so this year. It poured for days, weeks even. It was difficult to plan anything that involved spending time outside, and let’s not beat around the bush, I moved here a bit for this reason: to live closer to nature. Eventually summer came, with a two-month delay. Now we have hot weather, thunderstorms, sometimes even hot nights.

During this beautiful summer time, my sister and her family visited me. We talked a lot about the weather, about how many storms there are in Poland, how much the weather changes over the years. Here, too, you can see that’s the case – it’s just that the weather is becoming less and less predictable. No one else contributes to this, but ourselves. By living the way we live. Above our means.

I believe that small steps make a difference. I don’t buy clothes, rather I repurpose the old ones. Even when I say goodbye to a shirt it’s not forever – I put it in a special bag from which I choose materials for collages, book covers and other creative things. So first of all I don’t throw away clothes. I try to do all my photographic activities as ecologically as possible. Analog photography is not one of the eco-friendly ones, but I have learned to use my half-frame camera to at least fit 72 photos on one negative instead of the standard 36.

What else can I do for the planet? In my opinion – focus on music in my life. It is the one that is the most ecological element in my artistic life. I just need my mind, ears, voice and other people to collaborate. A beautiful ecological and social act of creation.

What about photography? I’m going into mixed-media, creating art books from used cardboard, pieces of paper, old envelopes, advertisements, newspapers. The rest of my work I want to make available as high-quality digital files. In this way, I skip the whole process of printing, binding and sending the works. At the same time, I urge you to print these files locally, so as to avoid long-distance deliveries. I know that it is more comfortable to order a printed and framed image sitting in the armchair of your own home and just wait for the courier. But comfort isn’t what it’s all about, it’s about a better choice. A choice for the environment.
